One of the biggest transitions a woman can make in her life is becoming a mother. There are losses and gains, which often need to be processed.
Talking about how she is feeling helps her to process the changes that are happening in her world. So often, because we want to help – we offer (sometimes unwanted) advice and that can make a mother feel like she's in some way not doing it right or that she's inadequate. New mothers are trying hard to find their way – they often just need a gentle ear to listen so they can vent and express their emotions.
Mothering for the first time is like starting a brand new job with no training. We often place high expectations on ourselves that we should know what to do and should get it right from the beginning. It takes time to learn about your baby and find the type of mother you want to become. We often suggest to new mothers to take the pressure off and be vulnerable and open to learning.
Patience and the ability to laugh also helps a great deal!
