Why this matters in Labour

Oxytocin is the hormone of love and many birth workers favourite word!

It makes us feel happy and loving and we release Oxytocin when we feel good around others, when we orgasm and in labour - the oxytocin release creates contractions, allowing us to labour and birth our babies.

To allow the full benefit of this hormone release, a woman needs to feel safe and be in a relaxed environment where she feels fully supported. Having her partner close to her, holding and supporting her and helping her to feel loved helps enormously with the birthing process.

We often say to partners, if you don't know what to do in Labour – then just turn up and love her like you've never loved her before!

Creating an environment where the mother can soften and relax and feel the love is also very beneficial. Dim lights, soothing music, warmth and safety, help the Oxytocin and the love to flow, making birth a whole lot easier.
